Alfa Romeo 8C2900B Corto Classic Car. Famed as one of Italy’s top post-vintage thoroughbreds, the 8C2900 was launched in 1935 to reinforce the racing reputation earned by the 8C2300. In keeping with their lineage, early models were built to racing specs, but many enthusiasts requested a road version. In response, Alfa Romeo introduced the “B” road-ready models to complement the “A” racing cars. Only six “A” racecars were built between 1935 and 1939. The “B” Corto version was built with a short 2.8m wheelbase, while the Lungo featured an elongated 3.0m wheelbase. The Corto was available as a two-seater touring car and as the Pinaferina-designed Spider, while the Lungo was built as a 4-seater touring car. Total production between 1937 and 1939 totaled 20 Cortos and ten Lungos. The model here is a 1937 8C2900B Corto. This sleek, high-performance Spider lives up to its designation as a ‘post-vintage thoroughbred’, making it easy to understand why a 1938 Alfa 8C2900B touring car was named “best-of-show” at the prestigious 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
